Carpet Care Tips

Vacuuming
Almost 85% of the soil on a carpet is dry soil brought in by the soles of shoes. Dry soil is abrasive and can damage the carpet fibers causing accelerated wear. This soil is best removed by regular vacuuming. It is also important to monitor the soil level in the bag of your vacuum. Change it when it is half full.

Spot Removal
When removing spots, always apply a small amount and blot it with a clean white cloth. Next, rinse by wetting the cloth with water and blot it onto the spot. Repeat until the spot is gone. Always BLOT never RUB!

Entrance Mats
Using entrance mats inside and outside of doorways will reduce the amount of soil brought into your home.

After Party Cleanup

No one wants to think about or plan for the after party clean up, but it’s part of the party process. It’s definitely not the funnest part of hosting a party but the job needs to get done and hiring a professional company like ServiceMaster Metro can ease your troubles while staying on budget.

One of the biggest concerns during the holiday season are wine and drink spills which can happen so easily but may be a pain to remove. Here's some tips to keep that wine spill from becoming a wine stain.

First, make sure to act fast!

•Fill a cup with warm water and add 2 to 3 drops of laundry detergent, preferably clear, for better penetration and distribution

•Saturate the spot with about half the solution, blot the excess with paper towels and repeat this step again

•Rinse with some warm water and blot again

There may be a little soil attracted to the damp spot, before the party's over but that can be removed the next day.

Now that’s all wonderful if you catch the spill right away, but what if the spill goes unnoticed and is allowed to dry and stain the carpet?
•If the carpet is fairly new or only subject to light traffic, the stain may be easily removed with the above process

•Remember that strong, especially alkaline detergents can remove the protective treatments and allow the stain to become permanent

•Never use bleach to remove the stain, since it’s likely that carpet’s color will be removed as well

•If the stain can’t be removed with a water and detergent solution, contact a certified professional cleaning service to remove the red wine

Certified professionals have a variety of specialized agents and techniques to remove most spots and stains without damage to carpet

•After cleaning, they can re-apply the protective coating to maintain high levels of soil and stain resistance.

What to do:
· Corrosive byproducts from fire and smoke can cause irreversible etching in as few as 72 hours. Call ServiceMaster Clean immediately.
· If the temperature is above 60 degrees, air out your home by opening windows and doors to reduce smoke odor.
· Clean Formica, chrome, porcelain and aluminum fixtures to prevent permanent tarnishing or etching.
· Change the air filter on your furnace it if uses forced hot air.
· Tape damp cheesecloth over important documents to capture loose soot in the air.
· Discard any open food packages.
· If the electricity is off, clean out the refrigerator and leave doors propped open.
· Send clothing with heavy smoke damage to a qualified restoration dry cleaner.

What not to do:
· Do not touch anything. Oil from your hands can permeate upholstery, walls and woodwork, causing additional damage.
· Do not wash walls. Incorrect cleaning could compound the soot residue.
· Do not attempt to clean carpets or upholstered furniture.
· Do not use electrical appliances until having them checked.
· Do not use ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet.
